August 2026
I hope this message finds you safe and well and that you've had an opportunity to relax and recharge over the summer. As we prepare for the Annual Conference, I wanted to share a few updates on how your feedback continues to shape ACRM. The past few months have been busy as we implement initiatives that strengthen our community, expand our global reach, and advance our mission. Below are a few highlights.
Listening to Our Members
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in our third Town Hall Meeting on May 8, 2026. Members representing all career stages joined us in an open discussion about the future of ACRM. These conversations, together with your emails and informal feedback throughout the year, help guide our priorities.
One message came through clearly: our members feel connected to ACRM because of the people. Networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, committees, task forces continue to be the heart of our organization
Five priorities emerged consistently from your:
- Supporting members through advocacy and education
- Improving communication and modernizing our website
- Expanding conference accessibility and participation
- Growing international collaborations and strategic partnerships
- Increasing the meaningful involvement of people with lived experience and their care partners
Rehabilitation professionals around the world continue to navigate evolving healthcare systems, changing policies, and increasing demands on research and clinical care. These realities reinforce the importance of a strong interdisciplinary community, and ACRM remains committed to supporting you.
What We're Doing
1. Strengthening Advocacy
We continue to work closely with national coalitions, including Disability and Rehabilitation Research Coalition (DRRC), Independence Through Enhancement of Medicare and Medicaid (ITEM) Coalition, and the Coalition to Preserve Rehabilitation (CPR), and have joined multiple advocacy efforts supporting rehabilitation research and services. A summary of these activities is available on our website (www.acrm.org).
Looking ahead, the 2026 Annual Conference in Washington, DC provides a unique opportunity to strengthen our advocacy efforts. We are planning activities that include a coordinated visit to Capitol Hill to raise awareness of the importance of rehabilitation research, services, and international collaboration.
2.Expanding Access to the Annual Conference
Building on the positive response to changes introduced in 2025, we continue to make the Annual Conference more accessible and engaging.
Highlights for 2026 include:
- Expanded livestream and on-demand programming for remote participants
- The return of the Rising Star Program, allowing members to invite a colleague to attend for just $99
- Our new Next Gen Program, providing the first 25 eligible early-career presenters with 50% off early-career registration
- Continued reduced registration rates for members from lower- and middle-income countries for both in-person and virtual participation
3.Expanding Our Global Impact
ACRM's international engagement continues to grow. This year we became an active participant in the World Rehabilitation Alliance, supporting the World Health Organization (WHO) Rehabilitation 2030 Initiative through global advocacy.
Furthermore, we continue as a core partner of REHABWEEK (the premier international rehabilitation technology conference that brings researchers, start-ups and investors together), with preparations already underway for the 2027 meeting in Switzerland.
For the first time, ACRM also participated in satellite events during the World Health Assembly as a proud supporter of the Global Coalition on Traumatic Brain Injury, working toward a proposed WHO resolution in 2027. In addition, ACRM continues to serve on the Steering Committee of the Global Partners in Rehabilitation, strengthening international collaboration and supporting the work of the World Rehabilitation Alliance.
The inaugural meeting will take place right before our conference in October, in Washington DC.
ACRM is pleased to collaborate with the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) to present Stroke Hot Topics: 2026 AHA/ASA Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guideline during the 2026 ACRM Annual Fall Conference & Expo.
Join leading experts as they present the latest evidence-based recommendations and discuss their implications for clinical practice, research, and interdisciplinary rehabilitation care On Wednesday 14 October at 8:00 AM ET.
These initiatives reflect ACRM's growing role as a global leader in rehabilitation science and advocacy
4. Expanding the ACRM Family of Journals
Our publishing portfolio continues to grow. Since April 2026, two new specialty journals have begun accepting submissions:
- Archives of Stroke Rehabilitation
- Archives of Cancer and Medically Complex Rehabilitation
These join our established journals, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Clinical Translation, further expanding opportunities to disseminate high-quality rehabilitation research.
Looking Ahead
I look forward to welcoming many of you to Washington this October. Our program reflects what you told us matters most: outstanding science, opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, professional development across career stages, and meaningful engagement with people with lived experience and their care partners. Building on the positive changes introduced in 2025, we continue to refine the conference experience to create even more opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate our rehabilitation community.
Thank you for your continued commitment to ACRM. Whether you volunteer on a committee, mentor a colleague, present your science, advocate for rehabilitation, or participate in our community, you are helping advance our mission.
My sincere appreciation goes to our dedicated members, volunteer leaders, staff, and Members of the Board of Governors, whose commitment makes all of this possible.
For many, August still offers a chance to recharge before the busy months ahead. I wish you a wonderful remainder of the summer, and I look forward to seeing many of you this fall.
Warm regards,

Fofi Constantinidou, PhD, CCC-SLP, CBIS, FACRM, FASHA

January 2026
Happy New Year! As we begin 2026, I want to thank you for being part of our global, interdisciplinary community dedicated to advancing rehabilitation research, education, and clinical practice, so we can improve outcomes for every patient, everywhere.
A quick look back at 2025
Guided by your engagement and feedback, ACRM made meaningful progress in 2025 in different areas relevant to our mission, including:
- Advancing and disseminating interdisciplinary rehabilitation science at the 2025 Annual Conference. We welcomed approximately 2,045 attendees from 29 countries last October in Chicago. It is impressive that about half of attendees were first-time attendees, a testament to the growing impact of our conference as the premier interdisciplinary rehabilitation research conference globally.
- Promoting accessibility and breaking down geographical boundaries is a high priority and timely. Our pilot virtual participation option at the Annual Conference was successful, and we are committed to improving our virtual programming going forward.
- Expanding ACRM’s global influence through a growing conference track at REHABWEEK 2025, the largest technology rehabilitation conference. Other international efforts include our admission to the World Rehabilitation Alliance, our participation in the Steering Committee of Global Partners for Rehabilitation, and our endorsement and support of international efforts by the Global Coalition for Traumatic Brain Injury aiming to submit a resolution to the World Health Assembly recognizing traumatic brain injury as a distinct global health priority.
- Strengthening advocacy and communication efforts through targeted, proactive actions that promote rehabilitation research and service delivery. Learn more.
- Revising our Equity statement and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility. Thank you to those who completed the Diversity Survey. If you missed it, you can access it here: Survey link. Your voice matters! Closing 31 January.
- Disseminating high-impact rehabilitation research through ACRM’s peer-reviewed journals. In addition to our two thriving journals — The Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Clinical Translation — I am happy to announce the addition of two new open access journals to our family: Archives of Stroke Rehabilitation and Archives of Cancer Rehabilitation. More details coming soon.
ACRM resources you can use and share
As a member, you have access to resources that support your work and can be shared with colleagues, trainees, and patients. I would like to bring to your attention two key resources:
- Education & Professional Development: free webinars, courses, recordings, and learning opportunities.
- Information and Education Pages: practical information for clinicians, patients, and families that you can distribute freely.
Looking ahead to 2026
This year, we will continue building on our momentum: strengthening collaboration across ACRM groups, expanding mentorship and learning opportunities, and increasing visibility for rehabilitation through research dissemination, advocacy, and global engagement. The Board of Governors is finalizing its Strategic Plan, which will guide initiatives for the next three years with our Mission as a compass for all activities. I will be sharing more about that in a different update.
We are also excited to bring the ACRM Annual Fall Conference and Expo to Washington, DC, 13 - 16 October, and I hope you will join us. Thank you again for your continued support and commitment to rehabilitation. I welcome your thoughts, ideas, and feedback (fconstantinidou@acrm.org). I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2026.
Warm regards,

Fofi Constantinidou, PhD, CCC-SLP, CBIS, FACRM, FASHA
ACRM President
P.S. Please feel free to forward this email to colleagues, trainees, and team members who may benefit from these ACRM resources.

July 2025
I hope this message finds you safe and well. First, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who responded to the April 2025 membership survey and to those who participated in our inaugural ACRM Town Hall Meeting on 2 May. Over 150 members across career stages took part in this important process, which reflects our ongoing commitment to stay closely connected to your experiences and ensure ACRM continues to reflect the values, needs, and realities of our global community. Your voice matters.
As promised, I’m writing to share what we’ve learned—and more importantly—what actions we are taking in response.
What We Heard: Why Members Value ACRM
-
Interdisciplinary networking
-
A welcoming and supportive community
-
Opportunities to connect clinicians and researchers
-
Learning and collaboration across disciplines
Challenges You Identified
-
Decreased research funding
-
Workforce shortages and hiring freezes
-
Threats to DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) efforts

Immigration and global workforce challenges
Clearly, professionals across rehabilitation (researchers, clinicians, educators, and advocates) are navigating complex changes. From national and state-level policy shifts in the U.S. to evolving global contexts, these developments impact the way we work, deliver care, conduct research, and support those we serve.
What We’re Doing in Response
Your input, through the survey, town hall meeting, emails, and informal conversations has directly informed our strategic direction. Key actions include:
1. Strengthening Advocacy & Communicating our Efforts
-
We are working closely with national coalitions (e.g., Disability and Rehabilitation Research Coalition (DRRC), Coalition to Preserve[SC1] Rehabilitation (CPR), and the Independence Through Enhancement of Medicare and Medicaid (ITEM) Coalition and have signed on to key advocacy letters. These efforts are now prominently listed on our website https://acrm.org/legislative-updates/ to ensure transparency.
-
We’ve launched regular advocacy updates via email to raise awareness and share tools relevant to your work.
2. Expanding Access to the Annual Conference
-
We recognize that travel is not feasible for many members this year. We are piloting a remote participation program for 2025 with live-streamed and on-demand content, expanding our established online poster format.
-
A full-scale implementation is planned for 2026.
3. Advancing Conference Accessibility
-
Our Accessibility Subcommittee continues to innovate to make the conference more inclusive and navigable.
-
Remote participation aligns with this vision and enhances access for all.
4. Reaffirming Our Commitment to DEIA
-
Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility remains unwavering.
-
We continue to invest in the DEI Committee and its three subcommittees.
-
Our updated Equity Statement will soon be available on the website and featured in our eNews.
5. Growing Our Global Presence-World Rehabilitation Alliance and more
-
Our international membership has nearly doubled over the past 5 years, now comprising nearly 20% of our community, spanning 51 countries and all continents.
-
ACRM’s application for membership to the World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA), has been approved. We are excited to join WRA, the global network of the World Health Organization (WHO) consisting of stakeholders whose mission is to support the implementation of Rehabilitation 2030 Initiative through advocacy.
-
ACRM remains a core partner in REHABWEEK, the premier international technology rehabilitation conference. In May 2025, our ACRM track included a keynote presentation, multiple posters, and three full days of presentations.
-
We’ve already committed to participating in REHABWEEK 2027 in Switzerland, opening more doors for global collaboration.
6. Improving Communication
-
Promotional emails have been reduced, and communication is now more targeted.
-
A new quarterly Message from the President like this one will keep you informed of major initiatives.
-
We’ve begun a full redesign of the ACRM website to make it modern, accessible, and member friendly. This project begins in 2025 and will be completed in 2026.
7. Honoring Longstanding Members
A Lifetime Membership Program is in development to recognize long-term commitment to ACRM. Launch expected in 2026.
8. Appreciating Our Volunteer Leaders
We’re piloting the ACRM Leadership Appreciation Program this year to better acknowledge the time, energy, and dedication of our community and committee chairs.
9. Addressing Research Funding Challenges
-
We’ll offer special sessions at the 2025 Annual Conference to help members navigate funding uncertainties.
-
We’re also exploring resources and training to help members build resilience in grant development and career sustainability.
10. Continuing Town Hall Engagement
Members appreciated the interactive format of our first Town Hall. We will host the second session during the 2025 Annual Meeting. Please keep an eye out for details!
I know this was a long update and if you’ve read this far, thank you! Your continued engagement, energy, and insight are what make ACRM the community it is. My appreciation to our dedicated members and staff who work closely with the Board of Governors to advance the mission of ACRM.
I hope you can enjoy a restful summer, and if you haven’t yet, please take time to recharge.
Thank you again for your support and for being part of the ACRM family.

March 2025
Dear ACRM Members,
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the complexity and difficulty of the situation we are navigating in response to Executive Order 14173. I know this has been a difficult and deeply personal issue for many in our community, myself included. I appreciate the thoughtful discussions and engagement that have taken place, and I want to express my gratitude for your dedication to these conversations.
This is not an easy path, and we are learning together. To ensure open communication and meaningful dialogue, we will be launching ACRM Member Voices—a series of conversations where you can share your thoughts and concerns. More details will be shared soon.
According to ACRM's Policy and Procedure Manual, “ACRM is non-political, non-religious and grounded in principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility.” These principles are central to our mission and the work we do to advance rehabilitation research and practice. At the same time, we have a responsibility to safeguard our members, our organization, and our ability to continue serving our community effectively. With these considerations in mind, ACRM leadership sought legal counsel from two independent attorneys to better understand the implications of the EO. This EO raises concerns for ACRM members both in the U.S. and internationally. Those living and working in the U.S. on foreign visas may worry about job loss that could compromise their ability to stay in the country. Additionally, colleagues outside the U.S. who require visas to attend the ACRM conference may face difficulties if the conference is perceived as conflicting with the EO. These broader implications are carefully under consideration by ACRM leadership and staff.
The situation is still evolving, and we expect more clarity in the coming weeks and months, especially if this EO is challenged or modified. I want to reiterate that ACRM stands firm in its commitment to DEI and will continue to allocate resources to support the important work conducted by our Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. At the same time, we acknowledge the responsibility to ensure that our members can engage in their vital work without unnecessary risk.
Thank you for your continued support, dialogue, and commitment to our shared mission. Please feel free to contact me with your thoughts at fconstantinidou@acrm.org.
Best Regards,
